NewBlackwood Jack didn’t intend to record the Triggers EP in an old hall nestled in the foothills of the Otways. If they’d had their way, they would have bunkered down in a beach house on the Great Ocean Road. But plans fall through, and at the last minute they wound up miles from anywhere, surrounded by paddocks and bushland, recording the collection of dark rock songs in the Kennedys Creek Hall.
But maybe it was fortuitous. Their debut EP, 2014’s The Pessimist was also recorded in a hall - the historic St Brigid’s at Crossley in south-west Victoria - and Kennedys Creek has been the scene of some of their greatest live moments, wowing the crowds of 800-plus people at the boutique music festival that happens there annually in October.
Blackwood Jack are making a habit of impressing people. From the festival atmospheres of Port Fairy Folk Festival, Queenscliff Music Festival and By The Meadow to the intimate vibes of Melbourne’s coolest venues such as The Workers Club, Cherry Bar, The Gasometer, and The Old Bar, the four-piece are on the rise.
They’ve already got an east coast tour under their belt, as well as support slots with Stonefield, The Delta Riggs, Money For Rope, The Pretty Littles, Steve Smyth, The Exploders, Magic Bones and Drunk Mums.
